Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco / Cloud Forest / Robles Treehouse Lodge

The four-day Manu National Park tour begins with a 4:00 a.m. hotel pickup in Cusco 11152 feet/3400 meters. A two-hour drive through the South Sacred Valley provides mountain and valley views towards Paucartambo.

Paucartambo 9534 feet/2906 meters the region’s folkloric capital features colonial buildings and an ancient stone bridge. Breakfast occurs here. The minivan proceeds to the Acjanaco mountain pass 11975 feet/3650 meters. This pass offers a panoramic view of the cloud forest mountains and the Alto Madre de Dios River’s origin. This is the Manu National Park entrance.

Following the Amazon view the descent through the cloud forest begins. Waterfalls and scrubland are observed. Stops are made to observe the Peruvian National Bird the Cock of the Rock. Guides provide information. Woolly Monkeys and Capuchin Monkeys are possible sightings.

Stops along the river route are made to search for wildlife. Soft drinks and snacks are available for purchase in towns. A picnic lunch is provided. A stop at the Madre de Dios river overlook occurs.

The Atalaya boat dock is reached in the early afternoon. A two-hour boat ride on the Alto Madre de Dios River follows. The boat pilot searches for riverbank wildlife. The boat stops for notable sightings.

At the Palotoa river tributary a switch to a Peke Peke occurs. The journey to Robles’ Treehouse Lodge takes approximately one hour.

The Peke Peke accommodates 4 to 6 guests. It is designed for deep Peruvian Manu Amazon exploration. Its small size allows access to remote areas.

During the Palotoa River boat trip Howler monkeys sloths and macaws may be observed. The Peke Peke experience is unique.

Lodge arrival occurs between 3 and 5 p.m. Bungalows are assigned. Bungalows feature amenities including cotton sheets latex pillows hot water showers solar energy lights and 24-hour WIFI.

Free time allows lodge ground exploration. Swimming in the Palotoa River is possible.

A night walk into the jungle begins at dusk. The guide observes nocturnal creatures. Torches are switched off to experience jungle sounds. The guide identifies sounds. The walk lasts approximately 1.5 hours.

Dinner follows the night walk. Meals are prepared with locally sourced ingredients. Vegetarian and special diets are accommodated.


The second day begins with a 5:00 a.m. departure to the Parrot and Macaw Clay Lick. Hundreds of birds congregate to consume clay. The walk to the observation point is less than 15 minutes.

The clay provides nutrients. The clay lick is a notable experience.

Macaws Amazon Parrots and parakeets gather. River clay licks known as Collpas attract numerous bird species. Birds consume mineral-rich clay after dawn.

Following the clay lick a return to the Treehouse lodge occurs for breakfast. A three-hour jungle hike follows. Wildlife observation occurs.

Local guides provide flora and fauna information. Monkeys sloths and peccaries may be observed. Toucans and oropendolas may be seen. Medicinal plant properties are discussed.

A return to the Treehouse occurs around midday. Lunch and a siesta follow. River tubing is offered. The guide provides instructions. The Peke Peke travels upriver for 30 minutes.

River tubing begins after a safety check. The Rio Palotoa River features lazy river sections and rapids.

In the evening a walk to Cocha Huito Lagoon occurs. Giant frogs and caiman may be observed. Nocturnal creatures are observed. A return to the lodge occurs for dinner and sleep.

Overnight at Robles Treehouse Lodge.


The clay lick is visited again for those interested.

Following breakfast a jungle walk occurs. The Strangler fig tree is visited. A bamboo forest area is traversed. Antbirds Rufous-headed Woodpeckers and Capuchin monkeys may be observed.

The bamboo forest features unique soil canopy and food sources. Bird and wildlife species reside in bamboo thickets.

Lunch and a siesta precede checkout from the Treehouse Lodge. A boat ride to Posada Manu Rainforest lodge follows.

The final night is spent at the renovated lodge near Palotoa village. A covered dining area and showers are available. A night walk is offered.


Following breakfast checkout from the lodge occurs. A boat ride to Atalaya pier follows. Capybaras and water birds may be observed.

At the Atalaya Pier the driver provides a scenic drive back to Cusco. A picnic lunch stop occurs.

Arrival in Cusco occurs around 4 p.m.

Additional Information

MEETING POINT AND PICK UP Hotel pickup in Cusco occurs on day one. The guide meets and directs to the minivan. The tour begins and ends in Cusco. Pickup occurs earlier for those outside Cusco. Contact for coordination. Additional cost and schedule arrangement are required.

TIME OF PICK UP Pickup occurs at 4:00 a.m. to maximize travel time and wildlife observation. Early departure avoids traffic and crowds.

BRING YOUR OWN BINOCULARS Binoculars are recommended for flora and fauna observation. Guides have binoculars and telescopes for shared use. Personal binoculars are recommended. The VORTEX 10 x 42 water-resistant binoculars are recommended.
