Itinerary

DAY 1:

Cusco/Cloud Forest/Posada Manu Rainforest

The journey commences with travel through the Cloud Forest leading into the lowland jungle. The initial four-hour segment involves traversing mountainous landscapes and valleys passing through Paucartambo the folkloric capital of Cusco featuring Spanish colonial architecture and a stone bridge. Breakfast will be provided at this location.

Subsequently the route proceeds to the Acjanaco lookout point at the pass 11975 feet 3650 meters marking the entrance to Manu National Park. The route continues through the cloud forest a habitat for indigenous flora. The landscape includes waterfalls and valley vistas. The itinerary includes opportunities to observe cloud forest vegetation such as mosses lichens and orchids as well as regional avian species. Woolly and capuchin monkeys are also observable. Periodic stops are made to facilitate walks to waterfalls and wildlife observation.

In the early afternoon a designated location will be utilized for a picnic lunch. A stop at a lookout point above the Madre de Dios river precedes arrival at Atalaya port between 1 and 2 p.m. River travel via motorized boat ensues. Wildlife such as capybaras water birds and howler monkeys can be observed.

The boat journey lasts approximately two hours culminating in arrival at the Posada Manu Rainforest lodge in mid-afternoon. Upon arrival cabin assignments are distributed and time is allocated for settling in prior to dinner within the covered dining area.

Upon arrival guests are assigned bungalows positioned on elevated platforms. Each bungalow is equipped with amenities including cotton sheets latex pillows a private bathroom with hot water showers solar energy lights and 24-hour WIFI.

Following settling in time is allocated for exploration of the ecological reserve. The evening segment includes a night walk for observation of nocturnal fauna such as snakes amphibians spiders and monkeys. Fireflies and bats are observable. Tarantulas are also frequently encountered. Periodic cessation of torch use allows for auditory immersion within the jungle environment. The guide will identify various sounds. The walk duration is approximately 1½ hours.

Following the night walk the group returns to the lodge for dinner. The dining room provides meals prepared with local ingredients. Vegetarian and other dietary accommodations are available.

Overnight at the Robles Treehouse Lodge a bungalow integrated within the forest. This location facilitates observation of nocturnal animals. The nocturnal environment is characterized by auditory and visual activity.

At 5 a.m. a visit to a nearby clay lick for parrots and macaws is conducted. The viewing point is a 15-minute walk across the river from the lick. Weather permitting the location provides opportunities to observe parrots such as blue-headed yellow-crowned and mealy parrots and macaws such as chestnut-fronted blue-headed scarlet and blue and yellow macaws as well as parakeets. Otters have also been observed at this location.

Following the clay lick visit breakfast is provided followed by a brief interval prior to a jungle trek. The trek duration is between three and four hours. The trek occurs within a private reserve featuring bamboo and primary forests. Wildlife such as peccaries monkeys Amazonian turtles and birds are observable.

At nightfall another night walk is conducted for observation of nocturnal animals such as tapirs tarantulas frogs snakes spiders and night monkeys.

A final opportunity to observe parrots and macaws is provided. Additional avian species such as toucans and monkeys may be observed.

Breakfast is provided at the treehouse followed by another jungle trek. The frequency of forest visits increases the potential for wildlife observation.

Return from the trek occurs around midday. Lunch and a siesta are provided. River tubing on the Palotoa River is offered. Safety instructions are provided prior to participation.

The river tubing segment traverses varied river environments including calm and rapid sections.

In the evening a walk to Cocha Huito is conducted. The location facilitates observation of giant frogs caiman and other nocturnal animals.

Return to the lodge for dinner and sleep.

Early morning river boat travel commences accompanied by avian species. Capybaras are frequently observable. The destination is Atalaya where a transfer to a minivan is conducted. The route proceeds through the cloud forest with a lunch stop. Monkeys and Cock-of-the-rock birds are observable.

The tour concludes in Cusco around 4:00 p.m. with hotel drop-off.
